The Scrum's Painting Challenge II

Hey you! You think you can paint? Think you have what it takes to show your stuff off to the world and compete against some of the best there is? Now the real trick.  Can you do it...Fast? Well, we are here to find out.  And this isn't your grandmother's painting contest, this one is for stuff, like Battlefoam and things.  But, seriously, there are prizes on the line.  Here's the skinny!

The Challenge
- 6 Weeks
- 6 Models
- Painted and Based to your best possible quality

The Catch
All models Submitted must fit a theme within the game.  Meaning, these models must all be within a unit, or have some connection in the story or game play. Examples are: Min Champs, Champ Heroes and Skaldi.  You can see a clear theme. Be creative here though. I don't want to see just a list of Battlegroups in a theme list. I want something kick ass that has an interesting scheme.

Here' the other part of the catch.  I need a list of all models you intend to paint, why you want to paint them and what theme you will be choosing for your submissions. Extra points given for anything and everything that sets your models apart, not just in paint, but in theme.

The Terms
- Entry to the contest is $5 donated with forum name at www.trollbloodscrum.com
- Photos must be clear...very clear.  The better the picture the better the model looks.
- All models must be submitted by the deadline each week in their completed form.
- All models being submitted MUST be pictured in bare metal or primed form with time stamp.
- All model groups must be submitted with explanation of theme and paint theme.

Contest begins Nov. 12th 2012. Models must be submitted by end of the week Sunday by 12AM based on your time zone.  Please included the time zone when submitting your initial information. Send all Submissions to Goris@Trollbloodscrum.com

The Loot
Best Painted: $50 off a purchase of $100 or more at www.Battlefoam.com
Runner Up: Trollblood Foam Topper
Best Theme: A Set of Trollbloodscrum.com Tough Dice
Random Prizes!
Patches
More Dice
eGrissel?

Depending on the number of entries our prize pool only gets more grandiose! So come one come all and even if you paid 5 bucks you might get something out of it. So even if you just want to be seen for your painting and modeling prowess you can still walk away with something sweet!

So, bring your best, bring it fast and show the world how good you are.

Duelcon Recap

Duelcon has come to a close and Sid and myself are home from an awesome weekend. I am equal parts exhausted and exhilarated. Below Sid and I will give you a recap of what went on, how we did in tournaments, tournament results and all the other goings on. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

Let me start this post out by saying thank you.  Thank you to everyone who contributed to Sid and I getting to Duelcon.  This blog would be nothing without it's readers.  Those of you who contributed to the blog, and you know who you are, thank you guys and there will be a lot of furious painting and podcasting happening over the next few months with all the folks who helped out.

Day 1 -

Sid and I fly in the day before so we were relatively well rested.  We got our free breakfast and checked into the con.  In the swag bag there were a few things of note: $25 off a Battlefoam purchase of $50 or more, a sprew with some miniatures on it that looked shockingly similar to GW models but under a different brand, lastly a set of rare earth magnets.  We hung around until the first set of events started and then we watched some games played a pick up game or 2 and had a pretty chill day before I entered in the 20pt MM/TC.

Round 1 -
My List:
Grim
Earthborn
Rok
Impaler

eSkarre.  This was a complete slug fest and I had the privilege of meeting my opponent earlier in the day so it was a fun game all the way through, but it came down to my Impaler getting a charge off on a KD Skarre.

Round 2 -
vs Legion
Saeryn is lame.  Like, really lame. Grim however is more lame counter feating on his army and then killing every last beast. I though I lost on scenario until I found out if I kill his beasts that I simply win.

Round  3 -
vs Cricle
Played against eKruger piloted by the masters winner Craig. Was a fun game that came down ultimately to him missing a crucial TK which caused the loss.

Round 4 -
vs Khador
You know who else is lame? Karchev. Holy shit is he beast in this format. I knew what he could do with the power sliding jacks and I just let it happen because I am nub and that's how it goes.

Round 5 -
vs Khador
God dammit. Karchev, again. F***! So yeah, this time I learned from my mistake earlier and feated early to prevents the huge run power slide BS.  I subsequently got the charge off with Rok and failed to seal the deal because well, dice are dice... 3-2 and failed to score a spot in the WMW qualifier so far.

It's now late and I want to go to bed, so I do...

Day 2

Masters was a 50pt 2 list format, non divide and conquer so I could use whatever lists I wanted. At the last minute I swapped my eDoomy list for a pDoomy list looking at the players and the armies from the last evening I felt it was the best option.

Round 1 -
vs Circle
Well, I faced off against Craig again and his eBaulder list.  I chose pDoomy with his beast brick and I felt pretty solid with my choice.  I was sort of out of position during my feat turn and it ended up being lack luster.  The rest of the details are trivial at this point.  Picture a de-clawed kitten swatting at Warpwolves for like 3 rounds. Craig is a great player obviously and I don't want to take anything away from his win but man... He felt bad for me and bought me a beer afterwards, that's how bad it was.... Dice games... 0-1

Round 2 -
vs Menoth
This round was against Harbinger which, is one of our worst match ups and once again I chose Doomy.  It was pretty attritiony until I got the itch and decided I might be able to assassinate Harby. Well a good amount of missed attack rolls later I hang my Earthborn out to dry and the game starts to go down hill for me.  I should have taken the opportunity to remove my opponents jacks and really win the attrition war rather then try for the kill.  One of my personal failings sadly. 0-2

Round 3
vs Khador
This round a faced a pretty standard pButcher list and my opponent was pretty nice and fun about the game which lifted my spirits a bit because the last two games were rough.  I finally pulled my eMadrak out of the bag and went to town. The effects were 3 dead heavies in one round and not a good outcome for Butcher. 1-2

Round 4 -
vs Skorne
I faced off against eMakeda with my eMadrak list and in the beginning my opponent was not enthusiastic about playing me to I started telling jokes and in good humor just said I'll let Madrak face tank for my army, not knowing that is exactly what would happen. Over the coarse of 2 turns Madrak weathered 2 Bronzebacks to the face with a combination of Grim Salvation and transfers. The end result was a Long Riders to Makeda's face. 2-2

Round 5 -
vs Legion
Have I mentioned how much I HATE radial deployment?  Really not a fan.  Also it's on of those scenarios that can really force an army to split up and Trolls don't like that much. Fury 5 warlocks can't spread their love much in those situations.  Anyway, against pLylith and once again eMadrak comes in to save the day.  By turn 2 I mired his beasts with Burrowers and Fenns and start the slow grind to victory. I have effectively neutralized his heavies at this point and Madrak is in no risk so I move in for the kill on Lylith. 3-2

I rounded out the day alright, but failed to make it into the WMW masters qualifier. Who knows how I would have done, but overall was a fun tournament.  Last that evening I entered into a story event where i ran a fun Borka list and has some fun games and drinks with people.

Day 3

I relaxed on Sunday had a good casual game with Javaman from the forums and watched the masters play itself out.  There were a lot of interesting lists being played and lots of good play happening.  By this time, Sid and I were exhausted sow e just took it easy.  In the end though I walked away with $25 from Battlefoam.  I met a lot of really chill guys from all over and had a great time.  I wish I could remember names because so many people were really awesome to me and they deserve some credit.

Things I took away from this tournament...

Playing lists you are comfortable with can really help you against bad matchups and second guessing yourself on which lists to choose is always bad. I can't say taking my eDoomy list would have won me games where my pDoomy list did not, but I know that list in an out with it's threat ranges and strengths and I feel like I would have had a better shake at it with that list.

Think outside of the box.  I saw a tone of different and new lists.  From tiers to oddball stuff.  We really need to shake up our lists building sometimes to challenge the meta and stay ahead of the curve. I've already started building some lists with Warlocks I haven't played in a while that have some real power and started adding in pieces that I think have some interesting synergy.

Do no let bad dice or bad match ups get you down.  A players confidence and mindset are perhaps their greatest asset.  Being calm, collected and moving on through adversity is the mark of a truly good player and can really make or break a close or hard game.

All in all I really want and need to play more scenario play.  It makes games so much more interesting for me and I just don't get enough of it in my local meta.  Also as my areas Warmachine and Hordes scene grows I see really potential for something like this as a Northwest regional con of some sort in the next few years.  Bringing people together to play this game and have a good time is perhaps the best thing about it and I really hope I can continue to attend such awesome events.

Trollblood Speed Painting by nosrek

So I have been working on a few ways to cut down on painting time and put something on the table that I don't absolutely hate. I have tried a few different speed painting tricks, but I feel this one is the strongest because it allows you to move into a higher level of detail at any point. When doing the bare minimum steps I can knock out one model in 30 minutes of painting time. My painting sessions are generally around an hour unless I really get in a groove. So for me it works best to knock out two models at at time. However, if you have the stamina you can probably do four or more since this technique caters to an assembly line style of painting. Of course you can stop at any point in the painting process, but I like to have something to show for at the end of a painting session.

So lets begin. First off here is what I am using brush wise.

Citadel large dry brush
Hobby lobby brush (it says number 2 round on it)

I prefer using bigger brushes. When I first started painting I was using tiny ones and I hated it. Ghool is always going on about using a bigger brush, he explains it well so look him up on the privateer press forums. Basically a larger brush carries more paint and you can almost always complete one coat before needing to load up with paint again. Using a larger brush has helped me learn brush control and good brush control helps you paint faster since you won't be going back and touching things up.

Next up paints, I prefer P3 paints, but they are not sold locally. I stock up on P3 when I am out of town. Most recently I was in Nevada and petegrrrr directed me to a great local shop. So I am stocked up on the basics but had to use Citadel and Vallejo for some things.

A New Tenacious Techniques post is up and ready for reading! Take a look at what Sid does with airbrushes.

Tenacious Techniques #1 - Painting Ethereal

Welcome to the first ever Tenacious Techniques, where I pick a painting technique and attempt (sometimes foolishly) to use the technique or style on one of my models. These post are going to be a short series, and I'll keep posting as long as I have ideas(bah i'm such a noob)! Just a little disclaimer, though; Some of these are merely attempts at styles and techniques, to better my skills as a painter. If you have other ideas of what I could do for Tenacious Techniques, shoot me an email at slaphappysid@trollbloodscrum.com.

This week I have been dabbling in two techniques, but I will only talk about one of them: Ethereal style.

The Scrum Painting Challenge Weeks 4 & 5

Sorry for the delay folks, life gets in the way, but this week we have a DOUBLE WHAMMY OF PAINTED MODELS INCLUDING a step by step tutorial by Zreef that I followed while painting my Pyre this week.  Enjoy!

So you want to create a lava troll of your very own?  Ok, well listen up, this is what you will need:

1) White Primer
2) Cygnus Yellow P3
3) Heartfire P3
4) Ember Orange P3
5) Khador Red Highlight P3
6) Khador Red Base P3
7) Red Gore Citadel
8) Scab Red Citadel
9) Chaos Black Citadel
10) Baal Red Wash Citadel
11) Red Ink
12) Badab Black Wash Citadel
13) Black Ink
14) Small dry brush
15) Medium dry brush
16) Large (or extra larger) dry brush
17) Assorted detail brushes to taste

Part 1:  Lava Base Effect

Step 1:  Prime your model with the white primer, do at least two coats so that it is brilliant white.  This is important so the yellow is very bright and will contrast well with the darker colors to achieve a nice "glow".

Step 2:  Paint your model with the Cygnus Yellow from head to toe (or any parts you want to be "lava").  Do *not* worry about getting an even coat, an un-even coat will help your lava effect look more "natural" as it will add in variation.  You should see that some parts of your model are faint, but brilliant yellow, and others are a darker yellow.
Step 3:  Dry brush your model with the Cygnus Yellow from head to toe with the large dry brush. You do not want a bone dry brush, it can be relatively wet and sloppy.  The goal is to get a bit more yellow on the raised surfaces.  Any "mistakes" at this point will not really be visible and will just make your model look more natural in the end so do not worry.
Step 4:  Dry brush your model with Heartfire from head to toe with the large dry brush.  You do not want a bone dry brush, it can be slightly wet.  You want to cover more than just the raised surfaces, but you want to be sure to cover most if not all of the raised surfaces.
Step 5:  Dry brush your model with Ember Orange from head to toe with the large dry brush.  You do not want a bone dry brush, it can be moist.  You want to cover just the raised surfaces, but you want to be sure to cover most if not all of the raised surfaces.  (picture tutorial 1 goes here)
Step 6:  Now from here on out we need to be careful as mistakes will become more visible in the end product.  Still use the large dry brush and dry brush the Khador Red Highlight, but only hit the surfaces you want to be "cooler", for the mauler this is the back, the spines, and the back sides of both arms.  You want a bone dry brush and you may need to do two passes.
Step 7:  Now from here on out we need to be careful as mistakes will become more visible in the end product.  Still use the large dry brush and dry brush the Khador Red Base, but only hit the surfaces you want to be "cooler", for the mauler this is the back, the spines, and the back sides of both arms.  You want a bone dry brush and you may need to do two passes. (picture tutorial 2 goes here)
Step 8:  Now from here on out we need to be careful as mistakes will become more visible in the end product.  Switch to the medium dry brush and dry brush the Red Gore, but only hit the surfaces you want to be "cooler", for the mauler this is the back, the spines, and the back sides of both arms.  Cover strictly LESS area than in Step 6 and 7. You want a bone dry brush and you may need to do two passes.
Step 9:  Now from here on out we need to be careful as mistakes will become more visible in the end product.  Still use the medium dry brush and dry brush the Scab Red, but only hit the surfaces you want to be "cooler", for the mauler this is the back, the spines, and the back sides of both arms.  Cover strictly LESS area than in Step 8. You want a bone dry brush and you may need to do two passes. (picture tutorial 3 goes here)
Step 10: Now from here on out we need to be careful as mistakes will become more visible in the end product.  Still use the medium dry brush and dry brush the Chaos Black, but only hit the surfaces you want to be "cooler", for the mauler this is the back, the spines, and the back sides of both arms.  Cover strictly LESS area than in Step 9. You want a bone dry brush and you may need to do two passes. (pictures tutorial 4 and tutorial 4 back go here)

Part 2:  Lava Effect Shading

Step 1:  Using the small dry brush do one more coat of Chaos black dry brushing as in Step 10 of part 1.
Step 2:  Using a detail brush, get a very wet brush with Baal Red Wash.  Paint like you would normal paint over all black surfaces from Step 1 in Part 2 and Step 10 in Part 1. This will help darken the transition from "cool lava" to black "hardened lava".
Step 3:  Pick out some details (I just mainly do protrusions) and using a mostly dry detail brush with Ball Red Wash, paint over the protrusions.  This step adds contrast between low and raised areas of the model. It also helps fix up parts we might have missed dry brushing.
Step 4:  Pick out some details in the "cool area" you want to look more solidified. Paint these details with a small detail brush with chaos black.
Step 5:  Repeat Steps 2-3
Step 6:  Repeat Steps 2-3 ...  you basically want to go slow and keep building up contras areas in the model, you will not be able to see much difference during each step, but slowly you will build up the darker areas. (pictures tutorial 5 and tutorial 5 back go here)

Scrum Painting Challenge Week 3

Painting Tips For The Average Painter

As evidenced from the photos, some of you are downright fantastic painters.  There are others however, that are more like myself when it comes to painting our models.  My paint jobs aren't terrible so long as you are looking at them from 3feet away.  Upon closer inspection you will often see buckles that aren't quite painted, or small smudges where one items color fades into the next.  This hobby is a fantastic hobby that provides me with a social outlet, creative process, and relaxion.  The problem is with limited time I often find myself having to choose between painting, modeling or playing.  Since playing the game for me is the most enjoyable part of the hobby, next to assembling and modding peices painting often gets left by the wayside.

Enter Goris' Scrum painting challenge.

His challenge has ingnited my competitive nature, my paint jobs won't be the best of the bunch, but I will win by completing a model each week if it kills me.  As the first two weeks have gone by and I begin work on my thrid and fourth Scattergunners I found a few things that are helping me plow through a unit.  Solos and Warbeasts take longer individually to paint because I try harder on them.  For the average unit Grunt though, it just isnt worth the effort.  So before I bore you all to death, here are a few tips and ticks that I use to get me through painting a unit of models that are all nearly identical.

The Scrum Painting Challenge Week 2

Well folks more photos coming in and we look like we are on pace to get everyone in on the raffle for a free BATTLE ENGINE!  This week I have figured out that technology thing and put in a neat slide show for you folks so it's much cleaner and easier to view.  Go me!  Keep those models coming guys!

Sid's Shenanigans! - 01/23/2012

I know this is late, but I wanted to make a quick post for the week, as I begin to finish up the last of the MHSF. Here are some pics of a few models left to paint:

I also want to announce for this week's challenge, I am going to paint a model that I should have painted a long time ago. I have been pestered and harassed to paint it, and I finally have begun to do so. I will be painting the Extreme sculpt of a Khador Destroyer! Yeah! I am so excited, and he is going to be so awesome. Not only that I am going to put him up for auction as soon as he is finished, so if you want to get you hands on him, keep your eye on Ebay for him. He could be yours in the near future!
For now, See Ya!

Sid's Saturday Shenanigans #9 12/10/11

Announcements
Welcome back to another episode of shenanigans! At the behest of my fellow authors I have been "persuaded " to make another post. It has been a while since I have last painted and I feel a little rusty, but once school is over I will have more time to paint, and get things done.
I have begun to paint the Magnus battlgroup, and I will not post WIP pics of them, because I want y'all to be surprise when you see the final product of what I will be donating for the Breast Cancer Brawl (snicker snicker). I have been wanting to make my shenanigans more...shenanigany, so I have looked at my previous posts and see what I could do better to make it these posts actually worth reading. After some severe critiquing by yours-truly, I am going to make a few changes in how I post.

First, I am going to post what paints I used this session to get the look of the model. This will help those that want to use the same colors I did to get the scheme that they want. Second, I am going to list step-by-step what was done to the model mixed with pictures from the model. Just in case someone wanted to copy how I painted the model. I hope that y'all enjoy this new format, and that you will want more shenanigans!

The guinea pig for this will be my buddy Jason's Mage Hunter Strike Force! I had to think how I was going to paint these guys for the typical angry elf colors. So, I decided to just get as close as I could and go from there. Alright, people let's git-r-dun!

Sid's Saturday Shenanigans #8 - 11/26/2011

Hello to all the Scrummers out there, and welcome back to another edition of Sid's Saturday Shenanigans. After a long break due to overwhelming school projects and deadlines. Finally, I will be able to make a post on the final product of the Scythean. It looks amazing, and it will look terrifying on the battlefield.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
In other news here is what's going on right now, future projects down the road, and also some ideas I have been churning in my head to shake up the Shenanigans. You guys are going to love what I have in mind for future posts.

Projects
First of all, the next project that demands my attention is the Magnus pink battlegroup for Breast Cancer Brawl. I have yet to get all the models for it, but there is nothing wrong with getting started right now. After that I have a full unit of Mage Hunter Strike Force and the UA. They will be painted the standard colors of Retribution with a little twist of my own. I am sure that Jason will love this little angry elves once they are done. As for my own models, I have decided to repaint my troll battlegroup and the few other models that I have for them. I was not sufficiently satisfied with the priming job that I did. It wasn't smooth enough to do a quality paint job on them.

I also still have Strakhov to finish, and there is not much left to do for him, and you will soon see pictures of him when he is done. I am very proud of how he turned out, and can't wait to use him on the table.

The Future of Shenanigans
For future posts, I am planning on streaming my painting sessions so you can see what I am painting at that particular moment. I will also be doing commentary on the techniques, that I use to get that top quality paint job. On the stream, you will be able to ask me questions about painting, personal stuff, armies that I play, or whatever strikes your fancy. Please be aware, that this is still in planning, and I need to get all the details flushed out and proper timings for breaks, and when I will be streaming. I hope to get this started sometime next year, when things die down a little after the wedding.
