Know Your Opponent: eHaley

Phreaker187 here once again welcoming you back to the wonderful world of Know Your Opponent;  this week starring everyone's favorite time mage, eHaley.  Now that I thing about it I'm almost positive that I named my first article "Know Your Enemy" hmm, maybe the mods thought it was a little to controversial. Anyway let's jump right into the meat of the article, the list.

Keep in mind that to effectively work eHaley needs to be played at a minimum of 50 points, luckily for us Cygnar players that's pretty much the tournament standard.  So here we are...

Major Victoria Haley +5
Stormclad  -10
Thorn  -8
Squire  -2
Journeyman Warcaster  -3
Arcane Tempest Gun Mages  -6
+Officer  -2
+Defender  -9
Eiryss, Angel of Lame  -3
Strangewayes  -2
Stormguard (max) -9
Stormsmith -1

Totaling us out at exactly 50 points of "turn back the clock" goodies.   First up for analysis:

Bron Hombrew (revisited)

We have speculated on Bron before, and let's face it, Trollbloodscrum Kith and Kriel might even give up beer for a week to get him... as long as he is cool.  Here is another Homebrew version of Bron that we entertain on a regular basis.

external image troll-axer.pngAs Madrak's plight continues one of his most trusted full blooded Trolls Bron has been with him since the beginning.  Having faced countless battles at Madrak's side Bron has shown an intelligence and skill nearly unmatched among Full Blooded Trolls.   With long exposure to Madrak's unique Sorcery Bron has begun to benefit from some of those affects when in proximity to Madrak and has even begun to mimic him to some small degree.  Bron wades into his enemies with unmatched fury cutting them down one after the other.

After one particularly difficult encounter with a lesser Skorne Warlock and a pair of Titan's Bron watched as the Titan's trampled Madrak into the earth.  Feeling the connection to Madrak break, Bron went into a rage and singly handedly destroyed not only two Titan's but the Warlock as well.  Nearly killing himself in the process Bron collapsed thinking the end at come.  When Bron came to some time later the connection to Madrak had returned.  Bloody and bruised the encounter bonded Bron to Madrak in a way that neither had experienced before.

To repay Bron for his long service to Madrak, and the many times Bron had stepped in to keep Madrak safe.  Madrak had Bron's great axe carved with Runes detailing his greatest deeds, imbuing the Axe with Runic Power, granting him even greater power's of regeneration and augmenting Bron's innate abilities.

Breast Cancer Brawl ~ Thrullg Auction

When we mentioned we were doing a Breast Cancer Brawl in our local lgs the Hero Clix players got on board as well.  This quickly degenerated into a friendly competition to see who can earn more towards the brawl Warmachine/Hordes or Hero Clix.  As part of our plan to utterly crush the Clix players we have decided to start a series of Blind Auctions here on The Scrum.

How it works.
1- We will present a model here (and on the side bar) for those of you interested to bid on, including an end time.
2- Bidding will be done via email to thegreatblah@trollbloodscrum.com
3- Bidders will not know whether they are the highest bid or not untill the end time, though we will happily let you know if you are the highest bidder or not.
4- Bidders may increase their bids at anytime if they feel their original bid is too low.
5- Winners will be announced (unless they wish to remain silent) and upon receipt of the donation and mailing information the item will be mailed promptly.
6- All donations gained from auctioned models will be included in our lgs total Brawl donation to the Hunstman Cancer Treatment Center in Logan, UT.

Merry Christmas from Trollbloodscrum.com

We really love all of you here on the Troll forums and as an effort to spread Xmas cheer and truly make fools of ourselves, we have composed a little number that we think you should hear.  This was a submission to Lost Hemisphere for their Xmas special, but honestly it was so hilarious, I want to post it here as well.  So, without further ado I present to you, Borka the Snowman.

We wish you all a safe and happy holiday, filled with family friends and a healthy serving of Whelp Ale.

Merry Christmas from the Scrumcast!

Baka's Tournament List Building - Part 3

Welcome back once again for the third part of my Tournament List Building blog series, it comes about a week or so later than I planned due to my being distracted by Star Wars: The Old Republic (which I probably should apologise for but I won't as the game is that awesome!) but as they say, the show must go on!

In the previous episode I detailed the first of the three lists that I intend to take to the competitive tournament scene in 2012, outlined the basic strategies and looked at the list from the perspective of my three key aspects of competitive tournament list building.  The first list looked at was Doomshaper2 and I know that there were a few people who pointed out that in a character restricted tournament I had blown three of our six character choices in a single list, which can be seen as a fair comment.

However many of my opponents know that I rarely take our character models with Mulg being the only one seeing consistent play and that was only with Madrak1 or Doomshaper2, so blowing a large portion of my character models in one list isn't a hindrance to my list building strategy.

Impact Attacks Explained

Alternatively if all the models are together you make your impact attacks vs all models you are engaged with, if your charge target is still alive you make the charge attack.  If the Impact attack kills your charge target then the charge becomes a failed charge.

Know Your Opponent: eStryker

Good evening folks Phreaker187 here once again talking about a subject that I'm much more familiar with than stinky trolls, that would be killing trolls.  As primarily a Cygnar player and to a lesser extent a Minions player I like to think I have the inside edge on all things swan related, and Troll players should too.

How many times have you lost a game because you weren't familiar with your opponents army?  I know I've lost many a game after asking the same question, "You can charge how far?"  I'm going to write a few short articles on on the ins and outs of playing against Cygnar and hopefully make you more aware of how to beat me... wait a minute... maybe not.

First things first let's start with a typical tournament 35 point list.

15 December 2011

eGrissel vs Garryth 25 points

Grissel knew Cylena Reyfall and her Nyss Hunters well, which made Horthol's report much more dire.  He had caught sight of a member of her band speaking with what appeared to be a mounted elf...  She hadn't seen one in person but from Grim's description she knew them to be unfriendly.  Not exactly at war with the non-humans they still didn't shy away from fighting the Trollkin whenever they encountered them.  Grissel and he band we not very stealthy so they setup in a small clearing around a pond and waited watchfully for any signs the Iosians had decided to set upon them.

Cylena didn't like fighting against the Trollbloods, though it seemed her current contract demanded it of her.  She knew Garryth to be quite capable, but having fought alongside Grissel on a few occaisions she knew the Trollkin Fell Caller to be especially tough and those that fought with her fought with considerable toughness even among the Kith and Kriel.  He scout returned to inform her that they had found Grissel's encampment and that she appeared ready... they must have seen one of those Destors traveling with Garryth as they were the only part of the band that couldn't blend into the trees with ease.  "Report to the Iosian Warcaster," she barked to her hunter and he immediately sped off into the woods.  It would be unfortunate if something were to happen to Grissel, Garryth would be paying her a bonus for certain for eliminating one of her best clients.

My List
Grissel Bloodsong, Marshal of the Kriels
>Earthborn Dire Troll
>ImpalerHorthol, Long Rider Hero
Trolkin Long Riders (Min)
Kriel Stone Bearer & Stone Scribes
>Stone Scribe Elder

Khador Journeyman

Did you know that it sucks when your hard-drive crashes? So thanks to Druidsandstuff for letting me use his laptop to post with. This week I want to talk about the Journeyman League. Just as a little bit of preamble, I tried a Zerkova list and it was terrible. She just doesnt work at low point costs. So I restarted my record with the following list.
The Butcher of Kardov (+6)
-Devestator (9)
-Berserker (6)

It is a tight, slow moving battle-box that does one thing. Smashes really well. Basically the turns go the same ever game. Full-throttle, charge smash. Butcher usually ends up getting the iron flesh, +3 DEF to a def 10 'jack doesnt really tip the scales very well. Fury goes almost exclusively to the Berserker. Turning his POW 16 axes into POW 19 makes all the difference in the world. And the bonus to his free headbutt is pretty nice too.

Sid's Saturday Shenanigans #9 12/10/11

Announcements
Welcome back to another episode of shenanigans! At the behest of my fellow authors I have been "persuaded " to make another post. It has been a while since I have last painted and I feel a little rusty, but once school is over I will have more time to paint, and get things done.
I have begun to paint the Magnus battlgroup, and I will not post WIP pics of them, because I want y'all to be surprise when you see the final product of what I will be donating for the Breast Cancer Brawl (snicker snicker). I have been wanting to make my shenanigans more...shenanigany, so I have looked at my previous posts and see what I could do better to make it these posts actually worth reading. After some severe critiquing by yours-truly, I am going to make a few changes in how I post.

First, I am going to post what paints I used this session to get the look of the model. This will help those that want to use the same colors I did to get the scheme that they want. Second, I am going to list step-by-step what was done to the model mixed with pictures from the model. Just in case someone wanted to copy how I painted the model. I hope that y'all enjoy this new format, and that you will want more shenanigans!

The guinea pig for this will be my buddy Jason's Mage Hunter Strike Force! I had to think how I was going to paint these guys for the typical angry elf colors. So, I decided to just get as close as I could and go from there. Alright, people let's git-r-dun!

What More Can The Scrum Do ~ Results

After some great input from many of you it has become apparent that only 4 of you think we are doing a good enough job and that nothing should change.  While that might seem like a good number, when you know that at least 3 of those 4 votes were by authors of the blog it changes the perspective a little bit.  So you our readers have spoken, and dutifully our scrummers have altered their game plans, sharpened their pencils and cleaned out their keyboards with canned air.

All with the ultimate goal in mind, to possibly do our best to almost give you everything you might want nearly as much as you are getting close to thinking you certainly nearly need.

Everything that more than 20% of you voted for is listed below

New Church League Round 3

With EvilFuzzyDoom

These posts document the NEW CHURCH LEAGUE (named after our regular gaming venue, affectionately nicknamed "the Church"). The NCL has ten participants, and will take place over nine two-week, Round Robin rounds with elimination finals for the top four players. Each player picks two casters for the duration of the League, unless they only own one caster, in which case they can pick their second caster at some point before the 5th Round. The match-ups, scenarios and any special rules are posted at the outset. Scenarios are from the PP Official Steamroller 2011 Rules. We should be wrapping by about mid-march.

My Warlocks for the League are pMadrak & pGrissel.

This Round, I played against Cygnar!

Baka's Tournament List Building - Part 2

Welcome back for the second part of my Tournament List Building blog series, in the first part I discussed the weaknesses that Trollbloods had in the past, the reasons why I didn't take them to the UK Masters last year and what I think has changed with the release of Domination in regards to those weaknesses.  I also outlined what I felt were the key aspects that have to be taken into consideration with any competitive tournament list building strategy, especially as the competitive meta evolves and seems to increasingly lean towards Character Restrictions and a tri-list format.

This second part will look at the first of the three lists that (barring some minor tweaking based on playtest games) I intend to run for the competitive tournament scene throughout 2012.  Not only will I be outlining my first list, but also how it matches up to the three key aspects outlined last time out; namely Scenario Superiority, Denial and List Busting.

The List
The first of my three warlocks that I intend to take will be Doomshaper2, I have long avoided the "power casters" in our faction as they have been referred to in the form of Madrak2 and Doomshaper2 in the belief that working with our lower tiered casters will help give me a deeper insight into the strategic depths of our faction and hopefully help take my play level up a notch or two when the time comes to take my best and dirtiest lists.  Without further ado lets get down to the actual list:

Hoarluk Doomshaper, Rage of Dhunia (*6pts)
* Earthborn Dire Troll (10pts)
* Rok (11pts)
* Mulg the Ancient (12pts)
* Trollkin Runebearer (2pts)
Kriel Warriors (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
* 3 Kriel Warrior Caber Thrower (3pts)
* Kriel Warrior Standard Bearer & Piper (2pts)
Krielstone Bearer and 5 Stone Scribes (4pts)
* Krielstone Stone Scribe Elder (1pts)
Janissa Stonetide (3pts)
Troll Whelps (2pts)

Reinforcements:
Dire Troll Mauler (9pts)
Feralgeist (1pts)

Those of you who have read my Domination Reaction Corner series might well recognise this list, it is the sample list included in the Rok review plus the 10pts of reinforcements permitted for a 50pt list, and it is one that I look at and struggle to find a way to improve upon.  So how does it match up to the competitive play criteria?

Scenario Superiority
One area that could be looked at in this list with concern is the relatively small footprint that it occupies on the table, just two units, two solos, a warlock and three heavy warbeasts is not a particularly large force.  Admittedly one of those units is purely support however the other unit is a particularly meaty 15man unit that also packs Steady.  Overall this list I will be the first to admit is not designed to grind out scenario victories, it's strengths lie in the other two strategic areas, but does that mean that it is weak in scenarios?

No, because to score scenario points you still need to be able to take zones uncontested, and what eDoomshaper does is give you a lot of high ARM, high health killing machines that he can use as pseudo arcnodes and who are all capable of limited movement after destroying enemy models.  This is one thing that is absolutely massive in scenario play, if you are able to move after destroying enemies then this so often makes the difference between just killing an enemy that is contesting a flag and both killing the enemy and then moving to contest it yourself (or even better score).

Denial
While not as good as Doomshaper1, Doomshaper2 does possess some very powerful denial tools himself.  First of all you have the ever useful Agitation, so many times I have rolled badly and seen my warbeasts frenzy even when they had just the single fury point on them, especially at key points in the game which have sometimes cost me victories.  This spell just being on his card forces the opposing warlock into a catch 22 situation, if they are forcing just enough fury to be able to leech it all then they are potentially opening up multiple beasts to frenzy checks, if they force enough to leave themselves short on fury leeching then you can opt not to use Agitation forcing the opposition warlock to cut himself if he wants to have his full fury allowance.

Refuge is similarly great for denial, combined with Goad this could see some warbeasts (especially on feat turn) pull back far enough to avoid being countercharged next turn.  Alternatively refuge can also be used to ram one of your heavy warbeasts down the opposing caster's throat, the amount of casters out there capable of taking down a full health heavy (especially once a whelp pops out to push DEF to an effective 13) without any degree of risk are very small, potentially either diverting his own heavies to deal with the threat or forcing the caster to face the choice of a free strike or take the risk of being able to kill the warbeast.

Similarly to Agitation, Doomshaper2's feat also serves as a deterrent to enemy casters about getting too close to him simply by being on the card.  Many of the more experienced players out there will have seen the 15" trample and double goad Wild Aggression trick on his feat turn and will always do their best to make sure that they keep their casters well away from Doomshaper2's beasts until you have blown your feat.  The great thing about this feat is that against jack/beast heavy lists you can go to town and pop it for the alpha strike, or against infantry heavy forces you can save it as a counter punching tool after the opponent has had to commit the bulk of his infantry trying to kill the beasts.

As for assassination denial, this is predominantly taken care of courtesy of Janissa's wall, the KSB aura and the Earthborn's animus (that he always casts on himself for free except when going for the kill and fury is needed elsewhere) which all combine to push him to an extremely impressive DEF17 ARM19 against ranged and magic and typically DEF15 ARM19 versus melee.  On top of that the job of the Kriel Warriors is predominantly to tie up opposing infantry and maintain a Steady infantry screen in front of Doomshaper which cannot be trampled through, Cabers are certainly capable of inflincting heavy damage but are again there to force the opponent to make the decision to commit his heavies knowing they will likely die to the counter punch.

List Busting
Finally we come to the final aspect, how well does this list deal with massive ARM and DEF?  While admittedly the Mauler never really gets to come into play in half of the games, the lack of Rage is partially offset by Primal.  The main purpose of Primal is of course for the MAT buff, in most cases ensuring that Wild Aggression is only necessary when aiming for caster levels of DEF (Doomshaper2 himself not withstanding) and beyond, even then with the combination of Primal and Wild Aggression Mulg and Rok are capable of hitting a staggering DEF19 on averages and packing a POW of 20 or beyond leaving them more than capable of turning any heavy into scrap in record time.

Admittedly the list itself doesn't really synergise so much as every aspect compliments each other and covers for their own relative weaknesses.  There are no buffs for the Kriel Warriors outside of the Krielstone aura and in half the games the Mauler's Rage animus.  The use of Primal needs to be weighed carefully each turn, as you effectively take one of your own beasts out of the game for a turn by taking the chance on using it when the dice might mean you would have scrapped whatever you were attacking anyway.

As far as assassination potential goes however, Doomshaper2 is probably as good as it gets for Trollbloods, he is capable of slingshotting warbeasts an unfathomable distance, and if the assassination is on, the combination of Wild Aggression and Primal pretty much means the end of just about any caster in the game, especially when used on Mulg or Rok.

Overall Review
When you stop and look at every factor and all the conditions that I laid out in part 1, this Doomshaper2 list ranks as so-so on Scenario Superiority, very highly on Denial and very highly on List Busting.  On top of that, it has the advantage of having three heavies, meaning that you could easily afford to throw away one taking out a key piece, maybe even afford to throw away two and in half the scenarios you will even have the Mauler coming in as reinforcement as well as a Feralgeist to try to help keeping your warbeasts around for that precious final attack.

On top of that you have Kriel Warriors and their self sufficient awesomeness, simultaneously serving both a defensive role in the protection of Doomshaper2 and an offensive role in jamming up the midfield and helping to create openings for the warbeasts to punch through.

Baka's Tournament List Building - Part 1

In my last blog I mentioned that I planned to attend quite a few competitive tournament events in 2012 including both the UK Masters and if all goes to plan Lock and Load way over there in the States.  Thankfully due to the new business model that PP is using where its 1 book per system per year I can be sure that there is highly unlikely to be any unexpected releases that would turn my head from the tools currently at my disposal when it comes to list building.

That was Then...
As mentioned in my other blog, last year I made the decision (which surprised many over here as I am known as a hardcore Trollblood player) to take my Retribution instead of Trollbloods to the UK Masters.  This was largely down to a handful of reasons (speaking in the present tense as of June 2011):

Firstly Trollbloods generally lack that ability to pull off a move out of nowhere that you didn't anticipate, tricksy is what can let you pull a victory out of the hat when your army is getting mashed.  Trollbloods are renowned for being tough, but also for being a relatively straightforward point and click faction.

n Learning Trollboods from Cygnar: Blue to Blue Part II ~ by Sardonic Artery

Repost from Sardonic Artery over at the PP forums

After a few months with my Trolls, I figured I better stop and evaluate how the transition from Cygnar (who I still play) is going.

Shelving the Untypical Trolls
I had a realization that I still wasn’t completely playing Trolls like Trolls. I found myself relying on shooting and high defense too much—things that the big, blue brutes don’t do nearly as well as Cygnar (and aren’t trying to). Though I’d had a number of victories, mostly from Grim Angus far strike shots and/or a Fennblade + UA mini-feat bum rushes (made worse by Borka’s feat), I still felt like I was leaving out a number of strategies that Trolls are known for. As a result of this, I decided to leave these models home for a little while.

Road to Lock and Load 2012

I interrupt my series of Domination Reaction Corners to instead bring up my random musings about my plans for the competitive tournament scene in 2012.  If all goes to plan then next year will be a pretty damn busy one for me in terms of tournament play, first up there is Smogcon in February held down at my local store Firestorm Games in Cardiff, followed by the Welsh Open second weekend of May at the same venue, just two weeks after that then I have the UK Masters in Birmingham and the very next weekend I hope to wrap up the tournament schedule with a journey to Lock and Load way way across the pond over in Seattle.

Admittedly not too much is really known yet about what tournaments will be running at Smogcon and if there was any event that would have to make way due to financial reasons then this would likely be the one.

I have a personal interest in the Welsh Open, having won the event back in 2010 I lost my title to Jamie Perkins last year.  I had the joy of playing Jamie during the tournament but came away unhappy with some of the glaringly obvious mistakes I had made over the course of the match and lost rather tamely as a result.  First off I have to doff my proverbial hat to Jamie, he had a truly astounding year last year cumulating in winning the UK Masters with his Khador.  That said however, as mentioned earlier I have a personal interest in the Welsh Open and will be hoping that I can come up with the goods to take back my title :)

New Church League Painting Weekend

Painting Weekend

With EvilFuzzyDoom

This weekend I got some painting and photography in, and since the fine lads plugged gave me a plug on the Scrumcast last week I figured I'd show them off (especially since I haven't gotten this round's league game in yet!). I also played a 3-man round-robin night and test-drove eGrissel, so I'll be putting in a little bit about what I found with her as well.

Sid's Saturday Shenanigans #8 - 11/26/2011

Hello to all the Scrummers out there, and welcome back to another edition of Sid's Saturday Shenanigans. After a long break due to overwhelming school projects and deadlines. Finally, I will be able to make a post on the final product of the Scythean. It looks amazing, and it will look terrifying on the battlefield.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
In other news here is what's going on right now, future projects down the road, and also some ideas I have been churning in my head to shake up the Shenanigans. You guys are going to love what I have in mind for future posts.

Projects
First of all, the next project that demands my attention is the Magnus pink battlegroup for Breast Cancer Brawl. I have yet to get all the models for it, but there is nothing wrong with getting started right now. After that I have a full unit of Mage Hunter Strike Force and the UA. They will be painted the standard colors of Retribution with a little twist of my own. I am sure that Jason will love this little angry elves once they are done. As for my own models, I have decided to repaint my troll battlegroup and the few other models that I have for them. I was not sufficiently satisfied with the priming job that I did. It wasn't smooth enough to do a quality paint job on them.

I also still have Strakhov to finish, and there is not much left to do for him, and you will soon see pictures of him when he is done. I am very proud of how he turned out, and can't wait to use him on the table.

The Future of Shenanigans
For future posts, I am planning on streaming my painting sessions so you can see what I am painting at that particular moment. I will also be doing commentary on the techniques, that I use to get that top quality paint job. On the stream, you will be able to ask me questions about painting, personal stuff, armies that I play, or whatever strikes your fancy. Please be aware, that this is still in planning, and I need to get all the details flushed out and proper timings for breaks, and when I will be streaming. I hope to get this started sometime next year, when things die down a little after the wedding.

Baka's Domination Reaction Corner - Rok

Welcome to the third installment out of seven of the Baka's Domination Reaction Corner series.  The first two articles gave details, my personal reaction to and sample lists that can build on the strengths of our new Domination model entries.  This one will be no different, and will be dedicated to our new character heavy warbeast, the fearsome (and drunken) Rok.

Rok
Rok is statistically a fearsome warbeast, statistically identical to a Bomber with +2MAT, +1PC but does boast a shockingly low THR of 7.  Make no mistake, if you leave even a single fury on Rok then he is going to frenzy on average dice, which combined with his animus you might not even feel like you need to care about that.  As well as boasting the standard big meaty fist found on Mulg and the Mauler, Rok also sports a rather tasty POW6 axe giving him a POW only one less than Mulg.  He also packs a SP6 POW14 ranged attack which does frost damage and comes with Critical Freeze.

Give Thanks

The young Dire Trolls all sat around the fire to listen to their Grandpa Dire Troll  called Stone Eater.

"Be Thankful," the old Dire Troll growled, "for all the tasty humans that abound for you to eat."

"Be Thankful," the old Dire Troll snapped, "for all the wonderful things they build for you to smash"

"Be Thankful," the old Dire Troll exclaimed, "for all the tasty creatures in the wilds that try to fight"

"Be Thankful," the old Dire Troll roared, "for our hunger that drives us to glory."

The young dire Dire began their frenzy as the old Dire Troll knowingly guided them toward the battle playing out between the puny humans in the clearing just down the mountain from their caves.

NOTE: Dire Trolls are typically solitary creatures and probably don't sit around a fire talking to their elders...

During this Holiday of Thanks, please remember all the things we are grateful for as we play this wonderful game with our friends.  Here at Trollbloodscrum we encourge you to use this upcoming holiday season to give a little back if you can.  When you are finished, go smash each others armies up at your local gaming store.

Son's of Bragg - AKA SoB's - A quick glance at our first Character Unit

Son's of Bragg - Trollblood Trollkin Character Fall Caller Unit
We have finally been blessed with our first Character Unit and oh what we have been given.  In this article I am going to detail why I think this is perhaps one of the best units we possess in faction.

Starting out there are 3 of them by the names of Wrathar, Tor, and Rhudd.  They are all autonomous with Identical stats lines.

The Scrum Cast E.3

Welcome to the Domination Extravaganza... As we attempt to provide you high class entertainment you are left with... well not high class entertainment.  Between TheGreatBlah's giggles and Goris' gravelly voice you will definitely be entertained.  In this episode we discuss

Sid's painting service

Domination Releases
Epic Grissel
Rok
SoB's

and much more...

It's a long one folks 2:24:10.  Continuing our trend of discrimination against those whose ears don't regenerate, you'll be confused if you only use one ear of your headphones.  That or you can listen to just Goris... which is a blessing and a curse.

Those of you who used the old feed it has been fed to Rok, please use our new feed from our new Scrum Cast Page

Despite our tireless efforts to keep the Scrum Cast away from itunes (lets face it, their interface looks a little too 'Retribution of Scryah' for us) The Scrum Cast will be available on itunes in a few days.

Baka's Domination reaction corner - War Wagon

Welcome all to the second of my planned series of Domination reaction corners, today I am going to be looking at and giving my reactions to the War Wagon, the Trollblood battle engine released in Domination.

War Wagon
Statistically it draws a great many comparisons to the Khador Gun Carriage, with identical SPD, DEF, MAT, RAT and points cost with one less ARM but two more POW on the mount attack.  However the similarities end there, in place of the ranged weapons on the Gun Carriage we boast a Scattergunner spray and the Pounder, a RNG10 AOE5 POW16 gun with Quake and Arcing Fire.

Similarly to the Gun Carriage, the War Wagon is a Cavalry battle engine and also boasts the same Weapon Platform, Trampling Hooves and Power Attack: Trample rules as its Khadoran counterpart.  Similarly the mount attack boasts automatic knockdown, however unlike the Gun Carriage it also ramps up the mount attacks to POW14 and has Horthol's amazing Linebreaker ability.  This ability alone makes the War Wagon far more devastating on the charge than the Gun Carriage while losing relatively little in terms of ranged firepower.

New Church League Round 2

Baka's Domination reaction corner - Storm Troll

OK most of us have had several days now to analyse and digest the spoilers for the Domination releases for our various factions, doubtlessly there has been some twitchy kneecaps out there ready to begin the jerking as some things are branded broken or made of fail, while others manage to slip quietly under the radar as simply being a solid choice.

The Storm Troll's reaction on the forums has been largely of the third category I think, no one has been calling borken and no one has been saying that he sucks.  This will be the first of seven reaction corners I will be doing, as I give a rough review of the model in question, my reaction to it and give a quick look at how the new addition fits into existing lists as well as building new lists around them.

The Storm Troll
Statistically, take a winter troll for every stat, swap the spray attack for a RNG8 electric type gun and cold immunity for electric immunity and you've got his base statistics.   Besides the token regeneration ability, the Storm Troll possesses three other special rules: critical disruption on his fists, electrostatic and lightning generator.

Deployment Basics, Part I ~ by TheHappyAnarchist

So your guys are getting jammed up, all in each other's way for deployment.  Don't worry, it happens to everyone when you start playing trolls.  We have a lot of models that can get in each others way.

I am going to do a series of articles here on the scrum to give some advice and tricks to help you get over that hump and moving smoothly.  They will cover infantry heavy lists, the "beast brick" and even radial scenarios.  That is what is planned for now, but if anyone has any questions or suggestions I may expand them.

With no further ado, I will start with the most tricky, most models and most trouble - the infantry horde.

To introduce our cast, we have the following list.
Madrak Ironhide, World Ender
 Pyre
 Impaler
Runebearer
Fell Caller
Champ Hero
Chronicler
Full unit of Kriel Warriors with all trimmings.
Full unit of Fenns with UA
Full unit of BUrrowers
Full unit of Scouts.

Something like this is how I like to start a game.
As you can see, there is a fair bit of infantry out there, but you are able to get a room by having the AD units.  They are bunched up at the moment, but of course everything will change the first turn.

Some key things.  Madrak, the Runebearer and Janissa are right on the front line.  This is to ensure they can activate first, get spells out and get plenty far up the field without getting jammed up.  The Runebearer does not always have to be on the front line, but if you want the Harmonious Exhaltation first turn, you will want him there so he doesn't get left behind.  You will also notice the beasts are in the back.  This is for two reasons.  One, to make sure they don't get killed early, and also because that encourages you to activate Madrak first and you will see how much fury you have left.  The Pyre goes on the side with the Cabers, because who doesn't love flaming cabers being tossed into the enemy?

Assassin's Gambit ~ Fiction

The Nyss Hunter crept slowly through the dry underbrush, the harsh heat of the summer sun and the biting flies were still difficult for him to deal with when compared to his cold winter home.  The environment didn’t even register to him at this moment; nothing did the moment before his kills.  Unwilling to attempt to get any closer to his prey the Nyss Hunter quietly placed two arrows in front him and knocked the third taking aim on his target.  He knew very little about this particular target and had no idea why someone wanted the Trollkin killed.  Small for a Trollkin he was still quite large by human standards, compared to most Nyss, Trollkin always seemed slow and clumsy and this one was no exception.  As the Nyss pulled back the first of his three shots he took note of the large maul strapped to the Trollkin’s back, he wondered how effective such a slow cumbersome weapon would fare wielded by a slow cumbersome humanoid when compared to the Nyss claymore he had carried most of his life.  He aimed center mass at the Trollkin and let fly all three arrows one after the other in rapid succession, his practiced hands moving faster than the eye could see.
At that instant the Trollkin dove sideways and rolled directly toward the Hunter’s position in the bushes.  Only one of his three arrows had hit the mark driving deep into the Trollkin’s left shoulder.  Coming up to his feet near the Hunter’s position the Trollkin let out an earsplitting cry sending shockwaves of energy at the now scrambling Nyss.  Branches shattered all around the hunter from the sonic wave of energy, leaving his ears ringing and his skin stinging from a handful of small cuts and slivers left by the exploding foliage.   The Hunter could not remember how long it had been since one of his targets had evaded him so completely, frustrated he began his hasty retreat down the narrow ravine running on light feet not hampered by the broken ground or foliage.  Missing would not be a mistake he would make again, though a new opportunity would be more difficult if his Trollkin target knew he was coming.
The Nyss ran comfortably down the ravine as the walls rose on each side.  He followed a narrow path up the right wall that he had found a few days earlier knowing it would lead up and out of the ravine.  Slowing a bit to check for pursuit the Hunter saw the Trollkin hot on his trail, ignoring the path and moving straight down the middle of the ravine.  Smiling he knew the Trollkin’s folly since he would soon be up and out safely away from pursuit.  The hunter crested a small rise as his path moved to the right in a switchback that would take him out of range and steeper up the wall when he skidded to a halt.  The switch back and the whole upper half of the ravine path had been blocked by a rockslide.  Knowing he had underestimated the Trollkin yet again he quickly scanned the ravine floor for the sign of his prey, just in time to see the Troll bellow another ear shattering cry at his position.  Again the very air seemed to ripple as small rocks shattered all around where the Nyss was standing.  This time though the hunter was one step ahead of the shockwave, ears still ringing the Hunter took two small steps at the rising cliff wall on his right and vaulted himself gracefully in backward flip directly over the Trollkin’s head, landing softly a few feet behind him.  Thinking to finish off the Trollkin, the Hunter pulled his bow and arrow in one fluid motion.  As he pulled back on the string the Trollkin only paused a moment before he rushed the Nyss, both of them knowing he wouldn’t get to the Hunter in time.  Right as the Nyss loosed the arrow the top limb of his bow snapped having been weakened from the sonic blasts stealing the power from his arrow that caught the Trollkin right in the chest.  The Surprise from the Trollkin as the arrow bounced harmlessly off his leather tunic was all the Nyss need to summersault backwards and renew his flight down the ravine.
Running softly the Nyss knew he would not tire before the pursuing Trollkin and so continued quickly down the rocky ravine floor.  Only the laughing song from the following Trollkin gave him pause, the words of a rowdy Trollkin drinking song echoing throughout the canyon.   The Hunter’s flight took him into a small opening leading directly into a smooth cliff face making clear to him the enjoyment he heard from the Trollkin.  The prey had proved a bigger challenge than he was getting paid to face and his benefactor would soon pay for the misinformation about this contracts unwritten abilities.  Turning to face the Trollkin as it emerged from the scraggly trees the Nyss reached back to draw its claymore.  Though he preferred his bow he was quite capable with the long curved blade that all Nyss learned to use from a young age.  Adopting a sideways stance with his sword in both hands pointing away the Nyss stared hard at the singing Trollkin re-evaluating the stocky humanoid as it prepared for the upcoming melee.  The calm surface of Nyss fighting forms the Hunter had practiced daily came floating to the surface of his psyche, though the Trollkin’s song seemed to buzz at his calm attempting to break it.
Unmoving the Nyss watched the Trollkin reach back to his heavy clumsy looking maul and bring the square headed weapon to bear with ease.  He noticed small glowing blue runes etched into one of the maul’s faces and marveled that someone would take so much time crafting such an unwieldy weapon.   The Nyss watched as the Trollkin grabbed the Maul mid shaft and slowly approached to what the Hunter expected to be a short fight.  Exploding into action the Hunter stabbed straight and high directly at the face of the Trollkin with speed and accuracy quickly attempting to end the melee.  The Trollkin easily battered away the attack with his Maul moving it much more quickly than the Nyss thought possible.  The Trollkin continued upward with the deflection angling his attack in a spin that arced up and then downward quickly at the Hunter forcing it to roll sideways past the Trollkin to avoid the attack.
Coming to his feet quickly and to the side of the Trollkin the Nyss slashed sideways cutting a large gash up his opponent’s side from the Trolls waist all the way up to his shoulder.  Grunting with pain the Trollkin staggered forward and away as the Nyss reset his fighting position.  The Trollkin charged the small Nyss coming in at the same high angle he had before, as the Nyss gracefully began the forward roll into a dodge the Trollkin released his grip on the maul with one hand and aimed a backhand at the head of the Hunter clipping him in the ear sending him tumbling to the side.  Rolling to his feet the Nyss again scrambled backward as the Trollkin shifted his grip again grabbing his maul with both hands at the end of its shaft spinning the maul in a wide arc in the direction of the Nyss, missing again but sending him back and away from the Troll.  The Hunter feinted another step back luring the Trollkin to step forward toward him then stepped inside the reach of the Troll stabbing straight the Trolls abdomen.  Reacting quickly the Trollkin slapped at the incoming blade knocking it downward and straight into his leg pushing though it to the hilt.  Reversing his grip the Nyss began to pull it out hoping to sever the Trollkin’s leg completely.  Dropping his maul the Trollkin grabbed the Nyss by both hands and proceeded to smash the Nyss’s face with his forehead sending the Hunter stumbling back.
The Hunter’s eyes blurred and the blood from his now broken nose that spewed all over his chest.  Staggering backward and away from the Troll expecting the Maul to crush his face at any moment the Nyss waited.  Spitting out blood his eyes cleared enough to see the Trollkin on one knee blood gushing from the wound in his leg unable to stand.  Having extracted the claymore the Troll grabbed his maul with one hand and smashed it into the claymore on the ground shattering the blade.  The Nyss drawing a long knife from his belt enraged at the loss of his claymore charged at the nearly immobile Trollkin.  With one hand the Trollkin swung the maul out low forcing the Nyss to jump straight up to avoid the weapon.  Arcing sideways and over the Troll the Nyss slashed downward with his short knife cutting a long line on the Trollkin’s face from the side of its cheek all the way up its scalp cutting into his face and head but unable to penetrate the humanoid’s thick skull.  Landing softly and rolling away again the Nyss nearly lost his balance from the disorientation that lingered from the head-butt.  All calm gone from the Nyss he charged the Trollkin again thinking to end the flight with a quick slash to the beast’s throat.  Again the Trollkin swung his maul out with one hand this time high forcing the Nyss to duck and roll forward.  Shifting his grip the Trollkin moved his right hand up the maul’s shaft to its head and stepped painfully toward the rolling Nyss.  As the hunter came to its feet the Trollkin punched the maul into the Hunters shoulder shattering the bones in the Nyss’s upper arm and collarbone.

Dizzy and nearly unable to stand the Nyss hurried back up the ravine blood running down his face, arm unusable, bow and sword gone.  He could no longer hear the Trollkin but dared not stop; thinking any moment the fierce Troll would be on him...

On both knees in the clearing the Trollkin watched as the Hunter sped away, unable to pursue, or even stand he hoped the assassin would not visit him again anytime soon.  Falling forward onto his hands staring hard at the ground trying to stay conscious he realized he wasn’t fighting a small human but an elf, he had never seen one of them before.  Eyes blurring his face hit the dirt and he lay still, nearly dead the gaping wound in his leg and up his side began to heal slowly... ever so slowly.

EvilFuzzyDoom - Chronicler of Trollblood exploits

This is my "About Me" article, of the sort which contributors to publications have always written. It's a traditional sort of thing. I'm an Australian, so you can expect the occasional curse-word & odd spellings, to go along with my upside-down view of the universe.

Age: 24
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Factions: Trollbloods, Khador

I'm a long-term wargamer, having played Warhammer 40,000 since 1997 and dabbling in Warhammer Fantasy or historical wargames once in a while. I've not been playing WarmaHordes all that long, just since early 2011; a few of my friends had begun playing and talked about it regularly and I would regularly get that feeling where you think you should understand what's being said but don't. It was like everybody was talking Dutch or something; very close, but not quite the same when you listen to the actual words.

So, one month of browsing the Privateer Press website later, I picked up Trollbloods. To be honest my first choice was almost Khador but we had an unwritten policy of not doubling-up on other friends' army choices. This ruled out Cygnar, Khador, Menoth & Cryx so I started looking at Hordes. Legion looked like Tyranids bred with play-doh, so that was out. Skorne was tempting but I once collected Khornate Space Marines and I don't think I could name a paint scheme I've had more trouble with than red and brass. A few models from the Circle range grabbed my eye but the rest I actively disliked. Trollbloods initially didn't strike me as fantastic, but at some point I realised I could field Obelix, trench machinegunners and Scottish samurai in the same list and that this was the best thing ever (I did eventually pick up some Khador, though).

My group meets in and runs League games out of a venue affectionately nicknamed "The Church" which is actually an excellent geeky share-house with a large living area and reverse cycle air conditioning.

Sid's Saturday Shenanigans #7 - 11/05/2011

Hey everyone! Welcome back to another edition of S^3. This time I have a little more to show. It is taking me a little longer than planned to paint the Scythean, but it has been a fun experience. I am almost done with the table-top phase of the painting, and will move on soon with the fine details.

I have been asked to donate my painting skills for our Breast Cancer Brawl, and I will be painting the Magnus Battlebox to be auctioned off in January. It will be a challenge, but I am honored to paint this for a good cause.

These past couple of weeks have been very stressful, but I have been doing my best to keep the Shenanigans going. Thanks for all of your support to keep it up.

Dire Brackets Round 2 Closing/Results

Grim takes down another Madrak this time eliminating his epic form and eMadrak destroyed most of Grim's army.  Pair of Bombers negated Grim Salvation allowing Grim and the Blitzer to shoot madrak to death.

pDoomshaper proved too much for Gunnbjorn's winter troll swarm thanks to rampager and Gunnbjorns own Earthborn taking out Gunny.

and Finally Grissel's song annoys eDoomshaper so much he overextends and finds himself face to face with Grissel herself.  Yup Grissel's army is faster than Doomy's

Scoring update and Round 3 Analysis TBA

Caster's Currently eliminated
Jarl 0-2
pMadrak 0-2
Gunnbjorn 1-2
eMadrak 0-2

Caster's Fighting elimination
Borka 1-1  vs  Grim 2-1
pDoomshaper 2-1 vs eDoomshaper 1-1

Caster's with No Losses
Grissel 3-0 vs Calandra 2-0

Warmachine All-Stars

In our hankering for the new IKRPG we have started up our own version.  Only with our point system you literally make a character that starts at the 2pt point level and works its way up to being a caster or a super solo.  It's probably not very balanced, but lots of fun.

In our first night test running it our party of dudes (each with a stat or two in dire need of assistance and one focus/fury to use) Fought off an onslaught of Trollkin.  They Pygmy Trolls nearly wiped them out early, but once they figured out how to revive each other they started getting the hang of it.  Our party of six had some close calls, but in the end they managed to take down a couple of Skinners, some Champions a Swamp Troll and a Blitzer.

Next fight is on as they will go head on with a few lesser warlocks and jack marshalls.  Will they survive to become full fledged Warcasters and Warlocks... we shall see.

Stay tuned for our homebrew rules and how to make your own Warmachine All-Star

Paint and Model Like You Got a Pair!! Part 3

Another weekend stuck at work = another painting/modeling blog post! This time I want to get into something a little less general and a little more specific: Priming. Priming a figure properly is actually one of thee most important steps to painting any model. So here are a few tips for priming a model.

Part one can be found here.
Part two can be found here.

Priming

Tip # 7) Follow the Directions. This may seem a little obvious, but it is very important to follow the directions on the spray can. Amount of time shaking the can, distance of spray, ventilation, temperature, drying time, etc. These are all important things to keep in mind when priming a figure. For example, not shaking the can enough and holding it too close to the miniature can cause the primer to pool on the figure, obscuring some of the detail, (yes this has happened to me before).

Sid's Saturday Shenanigans #6 - 10/29/2011

Welcome back to the Shenanigans! This weekend I was able to get things rollin' with the Scythean. I have the basic idea of what colors are going to be for the chitin and skin, and now I just need to get the table top quality done, so I can move on to the details.

This is just going to be a quick post showing some WIP pics that I have. I am sorry, that I won't be able to go into details. Today is going to be a very busy day for me and my fiancee. I will try to get more done in the next issue of Shenanigans.

Lovin' Leather

Leather has got to be my favorite thing to paint. It is quick and easy to make it look fabulous. To see what the leather looked like previous to the first step here, just look at any of the previous "Jarl" posts. First I mixed some mixing medium and water with bloodtracker brown. I applied this on all areas except in the deeper crevices, blending it in a bit as I went along. I should note that I used some straight paint to get the richer color and then used the mixture to blend it.

Jarl Skuld Paint by Marie; A Step by Step guide. Part 1

Marie over at Phoenix Games in P3 Color (formerly known as Jorganic Burger) has painted some pretty sweet models for us over the years.  Her current project is Jarl Skuld and she has done a step by step guide on her paint job of him.  These posts are compiled below from her chronicles of painting him. Jarl Skuld, Devil of the Thornwood Tactics

While updating an old tactica thread on the Scattergunners called Make Them Scatter it really got the cogs turning on how they can be effectively used with certain casters.  This inexorably moved me to our newest cast Jarl Skuld.  "The Devil" might look like Caine at first glance, but he couldn't play more different.

Sid's Saturday Shenanigans #5 - 10/15/2011

Welcome, Welcome Scrum Bums to another edition of Shenanigans! I have finished the Drakhun, and am itching to show you the final product of this awesome Khador model. However, before we get to the pictures, I need to talk about my appearance on the Scrum Cast!

As you may or may not know. I will be doing a little section on painting during the cast, and will be answering some questions about how to make a showcase model for master quality. To give you an idea of what I will be discussing, I will give you an outline of some steps to a master quality paint job. Please be aware, that this helps me to get that quality, and there are other ways to go about this:

On Learning Trollboods from Cygnar: Blue to Blue ~ by Sardonic Artery

Repost from Sardonic Artery over at the PP forums

 Intro
Figured I’d start a thread since making the leap to Trollbloods in the last couple of months. Originally a Cygnar (and therefore Mercs) player, I came in to Hordes via the Blindwater Congregation, with “no shooty” Barnabas being the opposite of the True Blues. Thing is, I’m the type of Warmahordes player who, as fun as they are, keeps Merc and Minions minon. I still love Cygnar—the combined arms approach, board control and how, even if you’ve got stealth and you’re hiding on a forested hill behind a rock wall, I’ll probably still shoot you—but I wanted an army that can take axe to face, play attrition, and run a decent level of synergy. In the end, Trollbloods seemed to fit best, though not without some swift competition from Skorne.

Dire Brackets pMadrak vs Grim Round 2

It was a hardfought slugfest that went back and forth in true Trollblood style, with each army whittling down the other, gaining and losing the advantage, tough rolls and snacking.  When the dust had settled out of 100 points of models all that was left standing was Grim Angus and a couple of his scattergunners.  Grim dodges a bullet eliminating pMadrak but will have to beat eMadrak to keep from being eliminated himself.  Only a few games left in this round with a couple Troll casters fighting to keep from being eliminated altogether.

Random Caster Tournament

Being a Press Ganger has many benefits and drawbacks.  One of the drawback is that more often than not a Press Ganger doesn't get to play in very many tournaments and when they do get a chance to play rarely does it count towards prizes.  One of the benefits is that us Press Gangers get to make unique events and tournaments just for fun.  One of those tournaments that we have upcoming at Phoenix Games & Comics is our...

Random Caster Tournament

What if Haley decided that Cygnar wasn't rigid enough for he and she left them to join the Protectorate of Menoth?  How about if Rathrock corrupted Madrak to the point where Cryx looked more appealing than his home with the Trollbloods?  Or if the Old Witch decided long ago to stay with the Circle of Orbors and their dubious ways?...

Sid's Saturday Shenanigans #4 - 10/08/2011

Welcome everyone to another edition of S^3. This weekend, since I have finished painting the Sluggers, I have moved on to other projects that I have in the works. First of all, the Man-O-War Drakhun. I am very excited to paint this model because, it is from my very first faction, and also it is a very beautiful model.

I will also be showcasing my battlegroup for the Journeyman League. I have decided to go with Trolls, since I have the battlebox and they need to be painted. You will get a glimpse of what my painting scheme will be like for the rest of the army, and some experimentation with different skin colors. Let's move on to today's showcase (and no it's not a showcase showdown like on "The Price is Right").

Adam wanted to have the tan-ish theme with his Khador, and he wanted me to paint accordingly, and he gave me some examples with his models that he himself painted. It gave me a great inspiration on how he wanted to have this particular model to be painted. I thought that I would have the model done by today, but it turns out that it's going to take me a little longer to paint due to it being a large base model.

Grissel Bloodsong, Marshal of the Kriels

Grissel Bloodsong stands as a bastion amid the storm devastating the lives of her people. Assuming leadership was never her goal, but she has proven worthy of shouldering the burden of Marshal of the Kriels in Ironhide’s absence. She gladly fights alongside her warriors and asks nothing of them she would not risk herself. They trust her to save them whether by shrewd words or the booming of her explosive voice and hammer on the battlefield.
